Can Sitting Too Long Cause Back Pain?
If you spend hours sitting at a desk, driving, or watching television, you may notice stiffness or discomfort in your lower back. This raises a common question: Can sitting too long cause back pain?
Prolonged sitting can contribute to back discomfort, especially when you remain in the same position for extended periods. Understanding why this happens and making a few simple changes may help reduce the stress placed on your back throughout the day.
Why Does My Back Hurt After Sitting?
The human body is designed to move. When you sit for long periods, the muscles supporting your spine remain relatively inactive while certain areas of your back experience sustained pressure.
Your hip and leg muscles may also become stiff after prolonged sitting. When combined with reduced movement of the spine, this can leave your lower back feeling tight or uncomfortable when you finally stand up.
People who already have back problems may notice that their symptoms become worse after sitting for an extended period.
Does Poor Sitting Posture Make Back Pain Worse?
Poor posture while sitting can increase stress on the muscles and joints surrounding the spine. Slouching, leaning forward toward a computer, or sitting without adequate back support can increase stress on the muscles and joints surrounding the spine.
Try keeping your feet comfortably supported on the floor and your lower back supported by your chair. Your computer monitor should be positioned so you can look forward without constantly bending your neck or upper back.
However, even good posture doesn't mean you should remain in one position all day.
How Often Should You Get Up From Sitting?
Changing positions regularly is one of the simplest ways to avoid becoming stiff.
Consider standing, walking around, or gently stretching periodically throughout your workday. Even a short movement break gives your muscles and joints an opportunity to change position.
If you work at a computer, a sit-to-stand workstation may also help you alternate between sitting and standing.
Regular exercise outside of work can further improve strength, mobility, and overall physical conditioning.
Can Chiropractic Care Help With Back Pain From Sitting?
If your back regularly hurts after sitting, a chiropractor can evaluate your spine and musculoskeletal system to determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.
An examination may include an assessment of spinal mobility, posture, muscle function, and movement patterns.
Depending on your individual findings, a treatment plan may include chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic exercises, stretching, and ergonomic recommendations designed to improve function and address contributing factors.
When Should You Have Back Pain Evaluated?
Occasional stiffness after a long day of sitting is common. However, recurring or persistent back pain deserves attention.
Consider having your back evaluated if your symptoms continue, become progressively worse, interfere with normal activities, or are accompanied by pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness extending into your leg.
